 | The
Metropolitain (Métro) - never more than 500 metres from any spot in Paris
- forms an important part of daily life. Built in 1900, some of the original Art
Nouveau entrances designed by Hector Guimard still exist like the one here: Abbesses
in the 18th. Our visit begin at St-Michel, near the Seine river and Notre
Dame. It's a very deep station, with curved platforms. In january 1910, when Paris
was overflowded with the water of the Seine, this station disappeared under the
water... The Metro style is more characteristic. Designed in the early XX century,
most of the station are fully decorated, representative of 'Art-Deco'. Everyone
knows about the Guimard entries style. But has one carefully observed the Saint-Michel
station stairs or the Louvre station decorated under Malraux's direction. Here
is an architectural investigation in the deep metro underground...In our back
way to the center of Paris, boarded on the 9Th, we meet at Passy with a railway
circular line, called La Petite Ceinture de Chemin de Fer. |
